The Night Circus

Time for another book-inspired post!  Despite the fact that my literary theory class is totally kicking my ass, I’ve somehow been reading books like crazy.  I’ve actually really been enjoying reading as I go through grad school, because even though I’m only two classes in, I feel like I have a better appreciation of well-written books.  One of my recent favorites is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.  I knew from the first page that I would like this book, and I couldn’t put it down!

The book takes place mainly in a black and white circus, so I tried to portray that and a few important elements of the book.  From thumb to pinky: the name of the circus – Le Cirque des Revês (the circus of dreams), the two of hearts, a clock (nowhere near as elaborate as the one in the book), a single rose, and a tree.  All of the nails have a distorted checkerboard pattern in the background (though the white-on-white ones are a bit hard to see).  I absolutely loved these, and kept them on for a few days even though I didn’t have the time or energy to do my right hand.  I think they turned out really well!

I used all OPI polishes for this manicure: Alpine Snow, Black Onyx, My Boyfriend Scales Walls, and Coca-Cola Red.

I know The Night Circus has been super popular for a while, so if you’ve read it, let me know what your thoughts are in the comments below!  And as always, you can add me as a friend on Goodreads (it’s like Facebook for books).  Happy reading!

Black & White Stamping

I was in the mood for something simple, and, since I haven’t done any stamping in a while, I ended up with these.  I’ve been wanting to use this stamping plate for a while, and I’m glad I finally got around to it.  I really like how these turned out: simple, but still really interesting.

black and white

I started with a base of OPI Queen of the Road, which is a really beautiful brownish-black shimmery color from the new Mustang collection.  I stamped with Milani White on the Spot and Bundle Monster plate 404.

black and white

I think I’ve just been on a black and white kick lately, that’s all I want to paint on my nails.  I’ve hit the point where I’m done with summer and bright colors and I just want dark, cozy colors and cold weather.  Anyone else?

Black and White and Peach

I’ve been kind of obsessed with polka dot nails lately, and did these simple black and white ones to go with a new polish I picked up the other day.  I really love graphic black and white with bright colors (see previous post here).  Perfect for summer!

I used OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls, OPI Black Onyx, and China Glaze V.

These are pretty simple, but definitely fun!  I’m planning on doing the reverse pattern (black with white polka dots) soon, with a fun summery color.

Modcloth – Handsome Prints Dress

I am a huge fan of Modcloth, so I was super excited when I got an email from them asking me to do some nail art inspired by one of their summer dresses!  It literally took me an entire week to decide which one to use – they have a ton of cute ones, but I finally decided on their Handsome Prints Dress.  I love that it incorporates a bunch of different patterns, and I thought the unique color combo would make for some great nail art.

I decided to do a different pattern on each nail to show some of the patterns on the dress (this isn’t even half of them).  The colors I used are: OPI Angel with a Leadfoot, OPI Black Onyx, Sephora by OPI Hippo to be Square, and Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Butterscotch.  I honestly would never have put these colors together on my own, but now I am completely obsessed with this combination!

I really love how these turned out.  I may just have to buy the dress now!

Check out Modcloth’s great selection of dresses here – new ones are added every day, and a lot of them come in plus sizes, too!  You can check out other Modcloth-inspired nail art in the nails section of their blog.  And keep an eye out for some nail art inspired by my new Modcloth quilt – I am completely in love with it!

May the Fourth Be With You

It’s Star Wars Day!  I wanted to do some nails to celebrate, but didn’t have a ton of time, so I used some cool black and white glitter instead of trying to paint storm troopers or R2D2.  But I think they turned out really well.  Despite my “B,” I’m getting much more comfortable writing in tiny letters with polish and a paintbrush.

I used OPI Black Onyx and Sally Hansen White On for the “May the 4th” nails.  The glitter nails are Essie No Place Like Chrome topped with Revlon Graffiti Top Coat.

Black, White, and Blue

I’ve always kind of loved thick, horizontal stripes, but I’ve never been that great at painting them on my nails.  Straight, horizontal lines on a curved surface are not the easiest thing to do.  But I thought I’d give them another go, and I like how they turned out.  Much better than my first attempt at horizontal striped nail art.

stripes and blue

I wanted to keep it simple with the black and white (the best kind of stripes, in my opinion), and thought the bright teal would be a fun accent.  Definitely a color combo I’m going to keep in mind.  The black and white are Essie Blanc and Licorice.  The blue is Orly Frisky, which is slightly more blue and less green in real life (it’s obviously completely different than the fifteen other light/medium bright blue/teal polishes I own – just have to keep telling myself that).

stripes and blue

I’m definitely a huge fan of the thick stripes (and they’re a tad less difficult to screw up than thin stripes).  We all know I’m a fan of geometric/graphic patterns with florals, and I think these would look great with some delicate little flowers (similar to this).

I Am Sherlocked

I’m not going to lie, I couldn’t wait and watched season 3 of Sherlock when it aired on BBC.  But I am re-watching it when it airs in America on PBS, because, lets be honest, you can’t really get sick of Sherlock.  So I decided to do some Sherlock nails.

sherlocked

I used OPI Black Onyx as a base, and Sinful Colors Snow me White for the designs.  From thumb to pinky: 221B (Holmes & Watson’s address), Moriarty’s apple, Irene’s phone, my favorite Moriarty quote (“honey, you should see me in a crown”), and Sherlock’s initials (how he signs his text messages).

sherlocked

If you’re a Sherlock fan, what do you think about these?  Are you excited for tonight’s episode?  It’s pretty different from the other episodes they’ve done so far, and there’s a bit of a surprise at the end.  And if you haven’t already seen it, do not miss the third episode of this season.  Trust me.

And if you haven’t seen Sherlock, you need to go watch it (the first two seasons are on Netflix), because it is pretty much my favorite thing ever.
