I am crazy excited for the Veronica Mars movie. I has a fan of the show back in high school, and I still have Veronica Mars marathons once in a while. I’m going to see the movie with my little sister tomorrow, so I thought I’d do some VM inspired nails.
I knew I definitely wanted to go with a VM signature: black leather. I used Nails Inc. Noho on three of my nails, and then added studs from Born Pretty Store. My other two nails are Essie Stylenomics, because I liked the idea of the dark forest green with the black leather. It looked less black in person.
Any other Marshmallows out there? If you’ve seen the movie, what did you think? I can’t wait!
I’m not going to lie, I couldn’t wait and watched season 3 of Sherlock when it aired on BBC. But I am re-watching it when it airs in America on PBS, because, lets be honest, you can’t really get sick of Sherlock. So I decided to do some Sherlock nails.
I used OPI Black Onyx as a base, and Sinful Colors Snow me White for the designs. From thumb to pinky: 221B (Holmes & Watson’s address), Moriarty’s apple, Irene’s phone, my favorite Moriarty quote (“honey, you should see me in a crown”), and Sherlock’s initials (how he signs his text messages).
If you’re a Sherlock fan, what do you think about these? Are you excited for tonight’s episode? It’s pretty different from the other episodes they’ve done so far, and there’s a bit of a surprise at the end. And if you haven’t already seen it, do not miss the third episode of this season. Trust me.
And if you haven’t seen Sherlock, you need to go watch it (the first two seasons are on Netflix), because it is pretty much my favorite thing ever.
Today’s nails were inspired by my iPhone case. It’s from a brand called Mara Mi and I found it at Target (they have some pretty cute tech cases if you’re interested). I’m super picky when it comes to phone cases, and I honestly settled a bit for this one, but I do love the simple but interesting black and white pattern. My last phone had a Mara Mi case, and I loved it so much I would have kept it, but my new phone is slightly bigger.
I used OPI Black Onyx and My Boyfriend Scales Walls. I think they turned out really cool. Almost a little bit tribal looking I think.
I’d been meaning to do these ever since I got the case, and I’m glad they turned out pretty close to what I pictured in my head. These actually inspired me to do some nail art based on my iPad case, which should be up soon.
This is my attempt at a skittle mani. I may have used too many colors, but I think it turned out ok. I’m not completely sold on the color combo, but it is definitely something a little different for me. Also – believe it or not – this is my first leopard print! I can’t believe I’ve never done one before.
I used Sinful Colors Snow Me White, OPI Black Onyx, OPI Jade is the New Black, China Glaze Fade into Hue, and Sephora by OPI Hippo to be Square.
I think I need a little more practice with skittles – and maybe to try one with two or three colors instead of five – but this isn’t bad for my first shot. I do think the leopard print turned out surprisingly well – I wasn’t expecting my first try to actually resemble leopard spots. What do you think?
I’m not a huge fan of matte nail polish. But, I do wear it occasionally (mostly to tone down glitter). I’m one of those “why get a ton of matte polishes when you can just get the topcoat?” people, partially because I’ve had awful (insane chipping) experiences with matte polishes. But, I’ve always disliked how matte topcoats kind of make dark polishes lighter and cloudy-ish. So when I saw this polish in T J Maxx, I thought I’d give it a try. And I ended up kind of loving it. As much as I can love a matte polish.
On three of my fingers is SpaRitual Body, which is a matte black polish. It is super black, super matte, and super smooth. Up until now, I’ve hated applying matte polishes. They’re hard to work with, and get clumpy too easily. But Body was one of the smoothest polishes I’ve ever applied. I will definitely be looking for more SpaRitual mattes (if there are any).
I happened to have purchased Revlon Elusive the day before, and was surprised to find that it was also matte. While I actually like this one a little better with topcoat, I thought I’d combine the two, since they’re the only two matte polishes I own that I actually like. It was hard to photograph, but it’s a black polish with green and teal glitter. So pretty!
Yes, I bought this one for the name. I have a problem, ok? At least I like this one. And yes, I have bought ugly polishes that may or may not have awful formulas just because I liked the name and/or had (yes, had) to complete the collection (cough – OPI Who the Shrek Are You? – cough). But Vel-awesome Raptor is actually pretty “awesome.
Vel-awesome Raptor is from an indie brand called Two Birds (their Etsy shop is called Two Birds, One Store – how cute is that?). And it is a glitter topcoat – though you might be able to get it opaque eventually – made up of matte neon green and black micro glitter. I layered it over OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls. From a distance, it pretty much just looks like pale neon green polish with black flecks, but I kind of love the effect! The green glitter is a bit sheer, so it’s hard to see over darker colors.
You can purchase Two Birds nail polishes from their Etsy store. I’m (not so) patiently waiting for a restock of Sandcastles in the Sand – I love a good neutral holo!
I have a pretty extensive polish collection (check out my stash here), but by far, the majority of them are “fall” and “winter” colors. That is, dark and/or neutral. Since my collection was kind of lacking in the bright, summery colors department, I decided to go shopping for some new ones. I ended up with a few from Essie’s spring and summer collections, including this one, Come Here (which is currently on my toes). I still felt the urge to darken it up, so I went with my go-to Mr. Candiipants flowers and some polka-dot borders. I must say, I kind of love it.
I used Essie Come Here as a base and painted the design with either Sinful Colors Black on Black or OPI Black Onyx, I can’t remember. Not that it really matters – black is black, but those two have the best formulas of any I’ve tried.
I think these are interesting without being too crazy. I especially love that Come Here is almost a classic red, but then turns nearly-neon coral in the sun. Perfect for summer, especially if you have an office job like me.
What’s your favorite summer polish this year?
