Fiesta

I was in the mood for something super colorful, and ended up with this design inspired by fiesta party decorations (at least in my head). They’re kind of tribal, kind of cutesy, but definitely colorful. They didn’t turn out exactly how I envisioned them, but I still really like them.

I started all the nails with a base of Cult Cosmetics Redondo Beach, which is a gorgeous nearly neon red. Then I painted on the stripes with Cult Cosmetics Newport Beach, Cult Cosmetics Playa del Rey, Cult Cosmetics Point Dune, OPI Good Grief!, and OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls.

These looked awesome from a normal distance (read: not HD close-up photos). I kept staring at my nails all day! Usually I prefer horizontal stripes, but I love how the vertical works here.

P.S. In case you missed the announcement in my last post: I officially have a Born Pretty Store discount code exclusively for my readers! Use code PSQW10 to get 10% off of anything at bornprettystore.com! They have tons of great stuff – from stamping plates and polish to studs and rhinestones of all shapes and colors. I’ve been buying nail art supplies from them since I started this blog over three years ago.

Game of Thrones

I am a huge fan of Game of Thones (both the books and the movies) and I am crazy excited for the start of season five today!  I usually end up missing the opportunity to do nail art for the premiere, but not this time!  (I did use a GoT-themed polish two years ago.)  I put together some nail art based off of this season five poster, and added in a nod to my favorite house (partially because the season slogan – Vengeance is Coming – wouldn’t fit on my nails).

got season 5

I used OPI Who Are You Calling Bossy? as the base for all the black nails, and Cult Cosmetics El Matador as the base on the red accent nail.  The Game of Thrones logo was painted with OPI Haven’t the Foggiest – I love that it’s a darker silver, but still sparkly.  For the rose, I used white acrylic paint (and a bit of black mixed in for shading) and Essie Head Mistress for the Blood.  The Targaryen house motto – Fire and Blood – was painted with black acrylic paint.  And the silver triangle studs are from Bundle Monster.  I topped it all off with OPI Matte Topcoat.

I am completely obsessed with how these turned out!  Acrylic paint is definitely upping my nail art game.  I’ve been practicing with painting words on my nails, but this is the first time I’ve attempted a script, and I’m honestly really surprised it doesn’t look like a huge blob.  If only I was ambidextrous…

got season 5

I haven’t made it all the way through the books yet, so I’m not sure what to expect this season, but I can’t wait!  Let me know what you’re most excited about for this season in the comments below!  I’m definitely ready for some more Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow.

Windowpanes & Flowers

Lately I’ve been seeing windowpane plaid everywhere, and I really love it.  I think it’s vintage-y and fresh at the same time.  I wanted to do a nail art version, and decided to combine it with this vintage floral design that I’ve been obsessed with lately.  Honestly, I’m not loving this manicure for some reason, but I do kinda like the 60s vibe.

windowpane floral

The base of the window check and the flowers is Essie Suite Retreat from this year’s resort collection.  The leaves are China Glaze Trip of a Lime Time.  I used my new favorite white polish for the windowpane and the base for the flowers: Cult Cosmetics El Porto.  I’ve been obsessed with their polishes lately – especially their basic black and white.  This is the most opaque white polish I own, and it has a great formula.

I considered not posting these, because I’m just not really feeling them, but I still think they’re kind of interesting. And I think the windowpane came out really well.  What do you think?

Neon Rose

I don’t wear neon all that often, but I really love it as an accent to more muted colors.  I think its a really cool trend, and there is a lot you can do with those highlighter-bright colors.  I picked up a few of the Color Club neons on Amazon recently (Color Club doesn’t seem to be sold in stores near me), and I am really loving them!

neon rose

The neon pink is Color Club Warhol.  The other two polishes are from another brand I’ve been getting into recently: Cult Cosmetics.  The gray is Marina del Rey and the gold glitter is Whisky a Go Go.  All of the polishes are named after locations in Los Angeles, which is pretty cool.

This mani is definitely something that seems a bit out of my comfort zone, what with the pink and glitter, but I think the gray and the neon keep it a little more edgy than girly.  I really like how the abstract rose turned out. I’ve seen a bunch of designs like this around, and my first few attempts weren’t that great.

I know Color Club is a relatively well-known brand, but if you haven’t tried them, I would definitely recommend them.  I am loving their neons and holographic polishes, and some of their cremes are really unique and beautiful (Wild Cactus and Artsy Crafty are my favorites so far).  I’ve been getting all of mine on Amazon. Cult Cosmetics (not to be confused with Cult Nails) are available on their website.  I highly recommend their black and white if you’re looking for some staples.

Vintage Flowers

You’ve probably figured out by now that I tend to repeat nail art that I really love, and these flowers are no exception.  I last did them here, inspired by a floral print I saw on Pintrest (which I can’t find anymore – why don’t I ever pin these things?), and just recently saw this this post from Mr. Candiipants, so I thought I’d give her version a go.  I don’t like mine quite as much, but I’m still totally in love with this print.  I’m going to try it in some spring colors next, I think.

The base of the flower nails is Cult Cosmetics Joshua Tree.  The flowers were done in Cult Cosmetics Chateau Marmont, Cult Cosmetics Rose Bowl, OPI Christmas Gone Plaid, and China Glaze Intelligence, Integrity, & Courage.  The rest of my nails (and the flower centers) are OPI Who are You Calling Bossy?.

vintage flowers

I was going to try and do some Valentine’s Day nails this year, but this was the first week of my Medieval Literature class, and I’ve had migraines every day this week, so these will have to do.  I’m not really one for pink and hearts anyway.  Hope you like them!

Vintage Stripes and Flowers

I’m back!  Sorry I’ve been gone for so long, it’s been a crazy month.  I went on a mini road trip over the holidays, bought a new car, and quit my job.  Throw in grad school, and I haven’t had all that much time for nails.  And honestly, I wasn’t that motivated to do nail art.  But I’ve been feeling great lately, so I’m going to try and start posting more.

stripes and floral

These were inspired by vintage floral patterns, and I really love the thick stripes as an accent.  I used OPI You’re So Vain-illa as the background, with OPI Black Onyx for the stripes and OPI Coca Cola Red, OPI Christmas Gone Plaid, and Cult Cosmetics Chateau Marmont for the flowers.

I absolutely love how these turned out!  I actually already did a very similar design that I will be posting soon.

I hope you all had an excellent holiday season!  I had a great start to 2015 and I’m really looking forward to the rest of the year (which includes a lot more time for nail art)!
