It’s been a while since I’ve done a book-inspired post. I’ve actually been reading a lot lately, and fell in love with Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven. It’s a beautifully written story about the aftermath of a flu virus that wipes out 99% of the world’s population. It’s one of those books that has something in it for everyone – a little bit sci-fi, a little bit family drama, and even a bit Shakespearean. If you haven’t read it yet, I would highly recommend it!
These nails were inspired by Station Eleven‘s gorgeous cover. They’re kind of a take on galaxy nails with less sponging and more stars. They didn’t quite turn out how I’d imagined, but I still really like them!
I started with a base of OPI Road House Blues and then sponged on a little bit of Essie Suite Retreat. The stars and letters were done with an ivory acrylic paint. I’ve been really liking acrylic paint for detail work – especially lettering – because it’s a bit smoother to work with.
Have you read Station Eleven? Let me know what you think in the comments!
And don’t forget to add me as a friend on Goodreads to keep up with what books I’m reading (I’d love to hear/see your recommendations, too!). And if you’re interested in books, check out my other blog: Adventures of a Bibliophile.
The idea for these nails came to me while I was watching Ancient Aliens (I’ve probably already mentioned my History Channel addiction). They’re definitely pretty weird, but I absolutely love them! They turned out almost exactly like what I’d pictured, and I really think these two completely different designs look amazing together – I kind of have a thing for combining contrasting patterns.
For my “Egyptian” nails, I used Essie Good as Gold and OPI Black Onyx. My galaxy nails are OPI Black Onyx, topped with Essie Blanc (for the galaxy base and the stars), Sinful Colors Hip to Be Square, and OPI Hey Baby.
Did I already say how much I love these? Because it’s a lot. They might be my favorite.
My first two ideas for today’s challenge were to either go all-out and actually attempt to paint the Van Gogh on my nails (which probably would have been a huge fail), or to go super simple and just use the polish I have that is actually called “Starry Night” (Sonia Kashuk). These are somewhere in the middle. Since I’ve done galaxy nails before, I decided to do something a little bit different with these: the stars are actual constellations. Totally nerdy, but I love them!
From thumb to pinky the constellations are Hercules, Gemini, Draco, Canis Minor & Corvus (two small ones), and Cassiopeia.
The polishes I used are China Glaze Up All Night, First Mate, and Manhunt, and OPI Alpine Snow.
And… my never-before-seen-on-this-blog right hand! Usually I do something simple on it, but this time I actually did the same design, so I thought I’d show you.
From pinky to thumb: Lyra, Ursa Minor (aka the little dipper), Virgo, Aquarius, and Leo.
I didn’t realize how difficult/awkward it would be to take a picture of my right hand! But I’m pretty happy with how they turned out.
