Game of Thrones

I am a huge fan of Game of Thones (both the books and the movies) and I am crazy excited for the start of season five today!  I usually end up missing the opportunity to do nail art for the premiere, but not this time!  (I did use a GoT-themed polish two years ago.)  I put together some nail art based off of this season five poster, and added in a nod to my favorite house (partially because the season slogan – Vengeance is Coming – wouldn’t fit on my nails).

got season 5

I used OPI Who Are You Calling Bossy? as the base for all the black nails, and Cult Cosmetics El Matador as the base on the red accent nail.  The Game of Thrones logo was painted with OPI Haven’t the Foggiest – I love that it’s a darker silver, but still sparkly.  For the rose, I used white acrylic paint (and a bit of black mixed in for shading) and Essie Head Mistress for the Blood.  The Targaryen house motto – Fire and Blood – was painted with black acrylic paint.  And the silver triangle studs are from Bundle Monster.  I topped it all off with OPI Matte Topcoat.

got season 5

I am completely obsessed with how these turned out!  Acrylic paint is definitely upping my nail art game.  I’ve been practicing with painting words on my nails, but this is the first time I’ve attempted a script, and I’m honestly really surprised it doesn’t look like a huge blob.  If only I was ambidextrous…

got season 5

I haven’t made it all the way through the books yet, so I’m not sure what to expect this season, but I can’t wait!  Let me know what you’re most excited about for this season in the comments below!  I’m definitely ready for some more Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I have a slightly ridiculous collection of green nail polishes, so it was a bit difficult to decide which ones to wear today.  Ultimately, I decided on one of my new favorites and added a simple design and some glitter.  Honestly, I’m not entirely happy with it, but I was too tired for anything else.

The base is Color Club Wild Cactus, which is a bit darker and brighter in person.  I don’t have anything even close in my stash, so it’s definitely worth a look if you like greens.  The glitter is China Glaze Pine-ing for Glitter, and I painted the word “luck” with Essie Blossom Dandy from Essie’s new spring collection.

Hope you all have a great St. Patrick’s Day!

P.S. I have a cool announcement coming soon, so keep an eye out for that!  If you follow me on Instagram (@thepolishsquirrel), you might know what it is already.

The Maze Runner

My most recent book-inspired nail art (seen here and here) has been pretty popular, and it’s definitely been some of my favorite nail art I’ve done, so I decided to make a series out of it.  My goal is to write one post a week inspired by some of my favorite (or most recently read) literature.

Today’s post was inspired by The Maze Runner by James Dashner.  I don’t know if this is a favorite, but I definitely enjoyed it.  It’s pretty much Hunger Games meets Lord of the Flies.  I got the book as part of a set (it’s the first in a trilogy), so I will eventually be reading the second one.  I just don’t feel completely compelled to continue with the story (like I do with Red Rising), but I’ve heard great things, so I’m looking forward to it.  If you’re a fan of dystopian fiction, The Maze Runner, is a good read (and soon to be a movie).

For those of you who haven’t read the book, I won’t ruin the plot for you, but WICKED is important.  I painted it on my ring finger with Essie Snap Happy on a base of Essie Licorice.  The rest of my nails are Essie Stylenomics with the maze design painted with OPI Moonraker.

I really like how these turned out!  I’m definitely getting better/more comfortable painting (legible) words.  If you’ve read The Maze Runner, let me know your thoughts below.  And feel free to post your book suggestions and add me as a friend on Goodreads!

Initially

I have a thing with typography, so I wanted to experiment with it a bit on my nails.  Leave it to me to attempt the hardest version first.  I can barely paint normal writing, so naturally I decided on some old English initials.  Still, I think they turned out pretty well.

initials

I used Nails Inc. Porchester Square on my index and middle nails, and then OPI Vant to Bite My Neck? on the other three fingers and to paint on the letters.  And in case you haven’t guessed, those are my initials.

Hope you like them!  I will definitely be doing some more typography nails, just maybe ones a little less complicated.  I have some chalkboard writing nails in mind….
